Despite some challenges and regrets, dancing at Jammix is still a blast

Every month or so during the school year, the Stanford University Dance Department puts on an event called Jammix. It includes a huge variety of music and dance styles... from schmaltzy tangos to goofy covers of American pop tunes to "Play that Funky Music, White Boy!" to Metallica waltzes (!) and beyond. And all for $2, too!

The talent is equally varied. Given that this was the first Jammix of the season, there were even more newbies than usual, but also quite a few impressively experienced folks (including dance teachers!) in attendance.

Statute of limitations on coveting an ex’s friend

Something I've been mulling over lately: What's the protocol on asking a friend of yours to, ahem, introduce you to one of her friends... if you once dated the former?

I can just imagine the conversation now...

I don’t understand American pop culture and I want to create a culture mashup

Apparently, according to a recent newspaper article, viewers are getting sick of reality TV shows.

You don't say.

Could it be that people are actually discovering that time spent in front of the tube watching others' (laughably) "real" lives is time that's not spent developing real friendships, pursuing real hobbies, learning real skills, getting real exercise or even real sleep?

Nah.

So much to say (take six divided by two)

In my life, the last 22.3 hours:

  • a screaming baby duet
  • faux yogacized safety instructions
  • dozens of signs telling me not to stand
  • yet another brush with fame (soon, I'll have top-level contacts at EVERY major broadway play! Okay, three. But it's a start!)
  • a massively huge sauna -- free!
  • dirty rotten scoundrels (from a distance)
  • the cheapest expensive hotel in the world? Or is it the most expensive cheap hotel? Hmm.
  • A hot british fitness instructor who had never heard of blogging... and hates computers (or "Why is life sometimes so damn unfair?")
  • The most costly cheerios in the world?

Hmm... I need to stop this teasing, don't I, or at least deliver? This certainly isn't the first time that I've mentioned wacky mini-bits from my life without getting around to actually going into details. And indeed, the list of AdamHappenings and Musings I need to eventually journalize is getting to be quite lengthy. Ah, but the more time I spend blogging, the less time I have to get myself into and out of Life's glorious and capricious randomness. No easy solutions.

For now, though, I have to catch some z's so I can be awake to haul 230 pounds a dozen blocks or so in order for me to eventually get to another famous (infamous?) Camp For Swingers(tm). From there, you can bet computering will be the last thing on my mind wink Bye for now!

AdamDance musings

Well, it's been the worst of times, it's been the best of times, to semi-quote those cliched novels. For those interested in my Lindy Hop and other dancing adventures, read on. smile

When just an e-mail doesn’t work… try bad poetry.  In public!

I humbly ask forgiveness
For what I did and didn't do
So now, my dearest Abby
Won't you please give back my shoe(s)?

P.S. -- I promise not to write any more bad poetic verses in your honor as soon as my shoes are returned smile

UPDATED 6/9/2005
It worked! I got my shoes back! smile

GrooveLily: What music SHOULD be! / too much AdamInfo

I admit that musical tastes vary from person to person. And I recognize that you may not totally dig one of my new music discoveries -- GrooveLily -- like I do.

But if that's the case, I urge you to get your ears and head examined.

Thoughtful, catchy, tight, witty, fun. Give a listen to some of the sample tracks from GrooveLily's musical, Striking 12, both here and here.

I don't think I've bought a CD in half-a-decade (as part of an RIAA boycott), but -- especially given the independent nature of this group -- I may plunk down some of my hard-earned cash to get one of those stupid round things.

[As an aside, their (alas, married) lead violinist is the epitome of the woman I eventually want to be with: talented, creative, smart, strong. Other fellas may swoon over buxom anorexic "model" bimbo-babes, but me... I've always crushed on amazing songstresses like Ms. Vigoda and China Forbes. Now I just need to get my ass back into the music performing / composing scene and meet myself some single musical women smile. It's been too long for me (both musically and romantically)...]

A rather wacky few days

I suppose I might as well work backwards. In a nutshell, my last few evenings have involved the following juxtapositions:
- Firetrucks, yoga, and a scary tattooed lady not named Lydia
- A mechanical bull, a strip tease (unintentionally starring yours truly), an oxygen bar, and cheesy martial arts
- A Harry Potter Waltz and innocently bad pickup lines
- Doggie business cards and a prestigious (and unexpected) job offer to work full-time for a billionaire

Hmm... actually, it's getting late. I think I'll stop there for now. Suffice it to say, though, that -- as usual -- my life is anything but boring. So at least I have some excuse for not being a consistently regular blogger (how do those 'A' listers do it, by the way? Do they not have jobs? Or do they simply spend their time at work blogging? Maybe it's all about ghost-blogging? Really, I can't figure it out.)

Got business aspirations?  Neuter your blog or suffer the consequences.

What would you think if you saw a blog from Bill Gates or Carly Fiorina or Sergey Brin or even your boss with musings about their personal life... fears, hopes, dreams, quirky friendships, frustrations, and so on?

You'd gawk, of course. And then you would -- along with, perhaps, the press -- freak out. "Wow, what a weirdo. Why's [such and such powerful person] writing about their personal life?"

Real (serious) businessmen and businesswomen, after all, admit no vulnerabilities. They're not even really human, except in limited, PR-approved ways. Indeed, it's okay for angsty teens or coding geeks or others to ramble about life, love, liberty and other personal stuff, but whoa unto the current or future business leader who dares tread into the realm of personal disclosure online.

I said no to a Goddess

I am so angry at myself.

There are a million and one reasons why I went to a blues dancing practica tonight and only danced one song... but none of them are compelling or rational reasons.

Worse yet was my assedness (is that a word?) towards the later part of the night.
