And when I sit around the house, I really sit AROUND the house

I suppose I should have seen it coming. I kind of did, actually.

But it took a professional's blunt assessment to hit the realization home in no uncertain words.

Compared to this, I really DO have a life!

It's admittedly tempting and often all-too-easy to make fun of people's extra-curricular pursuits. The movie Best in Show -- playfully tweaking over-the-top dog shows -- comes to mind, for instance.

I think I've found a new "winner," however. The International Federation of Competitive Eating. Of course, it's quite possible that the joke's on me, and that this isn't a real organization at all. After all, this IS very hard to believe.

This just goes to show that... um... wow. What DOES this show? I'm at a loss here.

Why, oh why, please tell me why!

Velveeta.

I received a (large) free sample of this... stuff, and after it sat in my cupboard for about six weeks, I decided it was time to be brave. It was a time for action.

Finally, a tax break that makes sense!

When I read that the U.S. government was offering tax credits for people buying SUVs, I was incensed but not surprised.

Imagine my contrasting pleasure, then, when I just read today that a congressman has proposed giving a tax break to those who cycle to work.

I can breathe clearly now, the smoke is gone

In a shock to smokers and anti-smoking advocates alike, Ireland's government has announced a ban on smoking in pubs, effective January 2004.

Colorful food in Brussels, Belgium

Food that is tempting to touch and taste that I discovered in one of the main squares of beautiful Brussels, Belgium during a visit in 1998.

‘Cooking’ with Cans: Crispy-Spicy Tuna Salad

Too lazy to cook, too cheap to go out or order in, and out of frozen dinners... I came up with an ingenious, tasty, healthy, and inexpensive dinner tonight.

Drinking and causality

Here's info on yet another report that suggests drinking is good for one's health. Though far be it from me to protest the conclusions, I do have to admit to lingering doubts surrounding issues of correlation and causality.

Ja!  I’m going to Deutschland!

ja.jpg I finally got my ticket ($249 roundtrip San Francisco<-->Frankfurt with a very special special!), and I'll once again be spending Christmastime with wonderful friends in Germany.

Of course, I can be a little cranky, and moan about the icky cold I'll be facing, the insane hassles of peak-time holiday air travel (in coach, no less), and so on. But aside from getting to spend time with great people, I'll also come back, once again, with a suitcase full of chocolate goodies.
