A music solution to make everyone happy

I touched upon this idea briefly in my earlier note about Musicmatch's new download service, but I'd like to go into more detail about what I see as the solution towards universal Music Happiness.

Without further ado, here is Adam's (hypothetical) Online Music Service, or "AOMS" for short.

Musicmatch Downloads - An Early review

I just had the pleasure of trying out Musicmatch's new Music Download service, and though I eventually plan to more neatly organize my thoughts about this and other online music services like PressPlay and Rhapsody, I thought some folks might be interested in my 'rough review' and notes at this stage in the game.

Amnesty FOR the RIAA

After unveiling a much ballyhooed "Clean Slate" amnesty program, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) hasn't been quick to defend itself.

However, even large, monopolistic, and evil entities deserve a chance to reform, to start over. That's why I'm offering a special "Clean Plate Amnesty Program" for the RIAA. I hope the RIAA will take me up on my generous offer, and I humbly invite you to share your comments and suggestions on that site as well smile

The music industry doesn’t get it - Part #173

I plan on writing up some lengthy commentaries on online music services soon, but for now, let me offer up yet another example of how these services (hamstrung by the truly evil RIAA) are simply not able to deliver happiness to music lovers.

Yet more music industry incompetence

How would you like to get CDs for just $7.99... "as easy as 1-2-3!"

Sounds tempting, right? It's understandable that folks noting BuyMusic.com's advertising about "79 cent tracks, $7.99 albums" would be excited.

The reality, however, is quite disappointing, even infuriating.

BuyMusic is a lousy service

Cry me a badly-acted river

So the movie studios have turned up the PR and are trying to persuade Joe Filetrader that downloading movies is wrong and really hurts the 'little guy.'

The first trailer features David Goldstein, a set painter who says that piracy hurts him more than film industry executives. Each ad ends with the tag line, "Movies. They're worth it.''

Somehow I'm not able to muster up much sympathy.

What is the Matrix?  A really crappy over-hyped special effects vehicle.

Hey there,

With all the hoopla surrounding the upcoming Matrix Reloaded movie, I was reminded about my sadness regarding its predecessor.

Why sadness? Well, everyone RAVED about the movie, and I thought it was, well, one of the dumbest movies I've ever seen, to put it bluntly. I WANTED to love it, but I just couldn't. And as a geek / sci-fi lover, I was so disappointed in what I feel was the squandered potential.

Dixie Chicks AND Charleton Heston?!

So a South Carolina House Presentative thinks the Dixie Chicks owe a free concert to military folks. No matter, of course, that Natalie Maines didn't utter a single word of disrespect towards any military person at all. We KNOW she secretly hates all of them, right?

Well, I have a matching idea for a free performance:

Lindy Hop Heaven

Take a moment to destress and check out this contagiously happy and definitely talented jazz quintet: Peter Davis and Lindy Hop Heaven. One of my friends introduced me to this group and loaned me their CD, and I haven't stopped smiling since.

You can hear a few clips on their Web page, and I've also encoded a full-length sample here of their signature "Lindy Hop Heaven" song, which should stream pleasantly (RealAudio Player required) whether you're on dialup or DSL. Enjoy!

Updated on 4/30/04:
Alas, I've lost access to a RealAudio server, and haven't had time to re-encode the songs on my site. My apologies!

MusicBrainz:  Intelligent music tagging and much more

Many folks are used to being able to insert their CDs into their computers and have the disc and tracks recognized via one of the online databases, such as GraceNote or CDDB. That's decidedly cool and useful.

But MusicBrainz, a new open source service, takes music tagging to a new level.
