Sci-fi without the chases?

Okay, let me lose a bunch of my readers quickly and cleanly:

I thought The Matrix was a lousy movie. All flash and little substance, and the little substance present was indelibly marred by plot holes and inconsistencies larger than what you'd find a giant's mound of swiss cheese.

What really bothered me, though, was the mix of (crappy) sci-fi + frenetic action. Channeling Reeses: "You put sci-fi in my action!" "You put action in my sci-fi!" Some would think it's all good. Me, though... I find it wholly unsatisfying.

Yet another reason why I hate Ticketmaster

My sis and I decided that it'd be fun to go see the musical Wicked, which is playing here in San Francisco. Granted, like most big-budget musicals nowadays, it comes with a painfully big-budget price ($85 for decent seats, plus surcharges). But this post isn't about surcharge-bitching.

No, I'm furious that there's no easy way for me to see what tickets are still available. Here's the procedure:

ColdPlay - Why on earth are they so popular?!

At a friend's urging, I decided to give a listen to ColdPlay. I checked out more than half-a-dozen tracks, and I'm honestly baffled as to this group's appeal.

Where's the joy? Any sense of humor? Or even a friggin' smile on their album covers for goodness sake?

Could a ColdPlay fan please clue me in? Is there a specific song I should hear? Is there some magical quality I'm simply missing here?

In the meantime, I'll bop in my chair to Moxy Fruvous, Brave Combo, and other groups that don't take themselves so damn seriously.

Buying legal online music may be cheap, but it’s still a pain in the ass

I think this IM exchange pretty much says it all.

GrooveLily: What music SHOULD be! / too much AdamInfo

I admit that musical tastes vary from person to person. And I recognize that you may not totally dig one of my new music discoveries -- GrooveLily -- like I do.

But if that's the case, I urge you to get your ears and head examined.

Thoughtful, catchy, tight, witty, fun. Give a listen to some of the sample tracks from GrooveLily's musical, Striking 12, both here and here.

I don't think I've bought a CD in half-a-decade (as part of an RIAA boycott), but -- especially given the independent nature of this group -- I may plunk down some of my hard-earned cash to get one of those stupid round things.

[As an aside, their (alas, married) lead violinist is the epitome of the woman I eventually want to be with: talented, creative, smart, strong. Other fellas may swoon over buxom anorexic "model" bimbo-babes, but me... I've always crushed on amazing songstresses like Ms. Vigoda and China Forbes. Now I just need to get my ass back into the music performing / composing scene and meet myself some single musical women smile. It's been too long for me (both musically and romantically)...]

Today I have rediscovered my music.

Once upon a time, I wrote a lot of music.

It is time for me to start composing again, but the first task, I figure, is rediscovering some of my long, mostly-lost past.

And -- for whatever reason -- I've decided to drag you with me. Perhaps akin to an actor thinking that people care about his or her political views, you can classify me as a blogger who thinks people care about his music. So be it.

But no matter. Here is a sampling of my music compositions and performances. The original copies of all of these recordings have long since been accidentally erased or damaged, unfortunately, and I don't have any copies of my hundreds of classical and jazz piano performances. Maybe someday.

Anyway, feel free to drop a comment here or contact me privately to share which tidbits you particularly enjoy and would like to see me expand upon.

Thanks for listening smile

Not your Father’s A cappella—Part 2

In an earlier entry, I offered a full-length example of a gorgeous song that may shatter your preconceptions of 'a cappella.'

Now I'd like to shift gears and offer a more upbeat, rockin' example: "Tasty, Tasty, Tasty" by The Blenders[ Listen to the song (via WMA streaming) | Get CD details ]. FYI, all the 'percussion' you hear is actually from someone's mouth!

Give the song a listen, and let me know what you think!

And yes, that means YOU! It takes a lot of time and effort to digitize, upload, and link to songs here, and I won't bother getting off my lazy ass to do so again in the future unless I get some feedback from y'all here in the comments below or via e-mail or IM, etc. Don't mean to sound like a nagging twit, but... well, then again, it's my blog, so I'll be a nagging twit if I damn well please. :D

Review of Sony’s new music service, Connect

I'm a glutton for punishment. When new music services come out, I love to try them, including Roxio's Napster, MusicMatch, iTunes, BuyMusic, Rhapsody, Coke's music service, FullAudio's MusicNow, RealOne, emusic, Weed, and many, many more.

Trying Sony's new music service, Connect (which runs on Sony's SonicStage software) was probably one of the most punishing of all. Let me count the ways:

The beauty of capoeira

Capoeira, upside down -- at Best of Brazil festival in San Francisco, April 2004
After attending a Best of Brazil evening here in San Francisco featuring the Brazillian art of Capoeira, I'm in a bit of a quandry. I don't want to sound like a marketing brochure, but I can't help but describe what I saw with a series of glowing adjectives: beautiful, flowing, passionate, strong, sensual, mesmerizing. I now have even more admiration for this talented capoeirista and photoblogger.

UPDATE: I've now posted lots and lots of photos from this Capoeira evening smile
