Adam as a petting “Sugar Mummy”?!

After being bored with the ever-changing-but-still-pathetic Nigerian 409 e-mail scams, I was delighted to be the e-recipient of a Nigerian scam that -- at least in its newness -- is moderately entertaining. I include it below in its entirety for your edification.

Food labels:  When does “All” or 100% not mean ALL?

I suppose, by this point, I should have learned to be totally cynical and untrusting, even when it comes to my favorite grocery store, Trader Joe's. But every day, I learn new and disappointing things by reading labels a bit more carefully.

For instance, how about "100% Juice"? You'd guess that it's made up of juice, juice, and juice, right? Nope. How about water, reconstituted juices, and "natural flavorings"? What, exactly, are the natural flavorings? Who knows, 'cause this label sure isn't telling.

And while we're talking about juices, when you see a label that trumpets in large type "Blueberry Juice"... does it seem very honest to you that blueberry juice is the third most prominent ingredient, after apple and grape? Truth in labeling would dictate: "Apple 'n' Grape juice, with a splash of blueberry," but, yeah, truth in labeling? Ha!

McDonald’s Fries:  They go on and on and on and on…

Here's a great (and scary) quote from the entertaining and thoughtful guy who brought us the movie Super Size Me!:

Well, nothing smells like that food. Nothing tastes like that food. It's its own animal. But here's the thing to always think about, anytime you think about buying those fries? Think about you're washing your car, you reach under the driver's seat, and you pull out a french fry. Who knows how long that thing's been there. But it looks like you bought it yesterday. Why is that? How does that happen?

- Morgan Spurlock, in an interview with Salon.com

Incidentally, after reading Fast Food Nation, I've not been to McD's in nearly four years now. I highly recommend both that book and Spurlock's movie!

A brief review of XM Radio Online

So I just signed up for a free 30-day trial subscription to XM Radio online. What can I say... I'm a sucker for all the online music stuff (having tried Napster, Rhapsody, Virgin Digital, Wal-Mart, iTunes, and probably a dozen other services...)

Alas, XM Radio is simply not worth your time if you plan on only using the online component. If you're interested in listening to music while away from your computer (like I suppose some non-geeks may actually do :D), it may be better. Here's why it's not an optimum online solution:

Sci-fi without the chases?

Okay, let me lose a bunch of my readers quickly and cleanly:

I thought The Matrix was a lousy movie. All flash and little substance, and the little substance present was indelibly marred by plot holes and inconsistencies larger than what you'd find a giant's mound of swiss cheese.

What really bothered me, though, was the mix of (crappy) sci-fi + frenetic action. Channeling Reeses: "You put sci-fi in my action!" "You put action in my sci-fi!" Some would think it's all good. Me, though... I find it wholly unsatisfying.

Delicious (or at least not-so-bad-for-you) and nutritious food and drink

One of the best ways to maintain good health is to keep a ready supply of 'non-evil' foods in the house. And while carrot sticks and prunes would qualify as quite healthy snacks, they fail my "food happiness" test.

So, without further ado, here is a list of some (not necessarily obvious) foods that I happen to actually enjoy AND feel pretty un-guilty about eating. Hopefully you'll gain some inspiration from my choices and perhaps even share a find or two of your own!

…and Cheney is just *SO* lovable!

Okay, I've shied away from politics for a while, but I just can't let this one slide.

I think Howard Dean's over the top. I've never been able to understand his appeal. Maybe his mother loved him, but I've never met anybody who does

- U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, speaking to that bastion of balance, Fox News

Hey, Dick... there's a difference between speaking bluntly and directly (Howard's modus operandi) and just making a total ass out of yourself. Before you become even more of a laughingstock than you already are, it'd behoove you to learn the difference.

Blogger DON’Ts (how to gain admirers, get money, stay employed, etc.)

I just came back from a blogger meetup, and am for some (possibly related) reason inspired to offer some blogging tips I've accumulated over the nearly three years I've been blogging.

Yet another reason why I hate Ticketmaster

My sis and I decided that it'd be fun to go see the musical Wicked, which is playing here in San Francisco. Granted, like most big-budget musicals nowadays, it comes with a painfully big-budget price ($85 for decent seats, plus surcharges). But this post isn't about surcharge-bitching.

No, I'm furious that there's no easy way for me to see what tickets are still available. Here's the procedure:

ColdPlay - Why on earth are they so popular?!

At a friend's urging, I decided to give a listen to ColdPlay. I checked out more than half-a-dozen tracks, and I'm honestly baffled as to this group's appeal.

Where's the joy? Any sense of humor? Or even a friggin' smile on their album covers for goodness sake?

Could a ColdPlay fan please clue me in? Is there a specific song I should hear? Is there some magical quality I'm simply missing here?

In the meantime, I'll bop in my chair to Moxy Fruvous, Brave Combo, and other groups that don't take themselves so damn seriously.
