$50K yr and crappy customer service

In one of my consulting gigs, I'm responsible for helping my company select a Web Analytics vendor. I've been both amused and shocked by just how clueless some of these vendors are.

Private label Gmail

I've heard again and again...

"I'd love to use Gmail for my company mail and can POP mail *IN* but can't send mail with my company domain *OUT*. I'd pay to be able to do this!"

So this raises the following questions for me:

Gevalia is a dirty spammer… stear clear!

Spam -- it's not just for no-name obscure jerks anymore.

Let's give a hearty raspberry to Gevalia, the supposedly gourmet purveyor of coffee and teas, who -- through a partner -- is now knowingly spamming me dozens of times a month.

Reeker madness and our society’s lenience towards drunk drivers

So, apparently this rather dumb fella went to bail out his brother-in-law using money that reeked of marijuana.

Long story short... the dispatcher suspected the guy was a-foul (smelling) of the law, the guy's car was searched (with his consent), "a pipe and a small amount of marijuana was found" and now "he could face six months to three years in prison and a $10,000 fine."

Using your penis to highlight bad search engine practices

Let me start by saying that this is actually an at-least-somewhat serious entry about the relevance of search engine results. No, really!

There've been many jokes about how some search engines serve up ridiculously goofy results for some queries. Take Google's AdWords program, for instance, which has recently served up eBay ads for everything from Greed to Guilt ("Guilt for sale...")

I know eBay (and its affiliates) must bring a whole lot of moolah to Google, but this seems to me as disturbing as it is amusing. Whatever happened to AdWords' relevancy requirements?

How not to win over colleagues

So last week I was eating lunch at Google as I do every so often for business (meeting up with my AdWords rep) or pleasure (hanging with friends). And, as usual, I had a delicious, delightful lunch.

A few minutes later, I arrived at my afternoon consulting gig around the corner, all smiles. I had e-mailed my colleagues there that I'd be in a bit later than usual on a Friday... "around 2:30 after some errands and lunch" and here I was, happily waltzing in to work about 2pm.

My colleagues, though, looked at me funny.

Useful weather forecasts without clutter

1) http://www.weatherreports.com/ rocks. Simple, crap-ad free, and easy-to-grok at a glance.

2) Also, try typing weather [your-zip-code] into Google -- e.g., weather 94112. Nice, eh?

My one complaint? I wish these two offerings would provide more info with one click (hourly forecasts, etc.).

Oh, and here's one by phone:

3) From any U.S. phone (other than a payphone), dial 1-800-555-8355 ("TELL") and say "Weather." Then say a zip code or city name and you'll get an detailed, often rather extended and informative forecast. TellMe offers lots of other great services, too, that you can glean from their main menu.
