BLADAM 2.0[?]: Life, Liberty, Love and Stuff
DISCLAIMER: This is my personal blog. The blatherings here aren't (necessarily) the views of the current company I work for, companies I've previously blessed with my presence, my loving parents, the Illuminati, or anyone other than me, me, me!

This is likely my last post

...using MovableType. It may be a week or so until you see my new ExpressionEngine-powered site, because tweaking is taking a bit longer than I had anticipated (more due to my fussiness than any EE problems).

In the meantime, this gives you (yes, YOU!) a great chance to offer me feedback.

- What have you enjoyed on this blog?
- Are there various options (navigation links, etc.) that you like? Others that are a waste of space or annoying or confusing?
- Are there certain features that you'd like to see? (a full text Atom/RSS feed option is in the works, for instance wink)

As I work hard to implement new blog templates and features and so on, I would love to hear from you! Please take just a moment to drop me a note at adam at the domain bladam.com, or via my contact page (which includes my IM addresses, and so on).

Thanks so much, and have a great weekend smile

Blue Bash: Babelicious but Beset by Bad Branding.  Bummer :(

I just got back from the Blue Lithium party at the swanky Ruby Skye nightclub in San Francisco, which was the official closing shindig of the amazingly popular AdTech conference this week.

Verdict: Largely lousy. Here's why:

Hey, Alexa… what’s your RDF noseyness about?

I've recently noticed the Alexabot searching for /[every-category-on-my-blog]/index.rdf. Anyone know what's up with that? Why not .xml? Or .rss?

Changing blog software… new Adam site, and more

Hi there smile

Before I skedaddle off to a going away party for a friend, I thought I'd share a few brief tidbits with you:

1) For a variety of reasons, I'm moving from MovableType (the software that currently powers this blog) to ExpressionEngine. More info on that later... but now, I'm warning you that there may be some (not-so-fun) funkiness with this blog over the weekend. Sorry!

2) For the whopping two or three of you (hi Mom, Dad, and Sis!) that are interested in more personal AdamDetails and would like to, say, listen to music I've composed and stuff like that... I now have a new site, lasnik.net. Come visit and let me know what you think smile

3) On a geekier note, I've learned that link rel="stylesheet"... seems to be a better choice than the style type="text/css" @import url(Style.css)... method, which for some reason makes the (same) stylesheet be reloaded upon every page (on IE, not Firebird, interestingly enough).

Anyway, I'm off! Have a great weekend, everyone! smile

Self-destructive behavior—advice and encouragement needed, please.

No, this isn't about me going post-crazy today, procrastinating more 'important' things. wink

Rather, my friend Jennifer has posted an interesting question concerning what to do when a friend has disclosed serious, life-threatening self-destructive behavior (illicit drug use, anorexia, etc.).

Do read her note, and if you have a moment, contribute even just a brief thought or word of encouragement. Understandably, it's stuff like this that I really like to promote because it involves actually helping other people, not just navel-gazing.

Bunch o’ fat smelly slobs

You know, this used to be such a nice feathery neighborhood. But now it's populated by a bunch of fat, loud, belching slobs, hogging up all the sunny deck spots. And Doris wonders why I'm suggesting we fly further South for the Winter..."

“Justifications” for partially-hydrogenated oils

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote to the corporate headquarters of health-food-oriented "Trader Joe's" to express concern about the prominence of partially-hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup in their offerings. As you may know, partially-hydrogenated oils have been resoundingly implicated in accelerating heart disease (it's basically like injecting cement into your blood vessels), and high fructose corn syrup has been widely acknowledged as significantly contributing to weight gain (moreso than other sweeteners).

I received a thoughtful and interesting snail mail letter in reply to my concerns, which read in part:

It’s the Community, stupid!

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending a meet-'n'-greet sort of open house with Technorati, a company that is making really useful and fun tools for the blogosphere. I was honored and humbled to be at this event, given that the list of folks there read a bit like an impressive Who's Who in geek lore.

Beyond all the cool info and group conversations, a chat that particularly stuck with me was one I had with Mike, one of the Technorati engineers. I learned that he has a blog on TypePad, and I was initially puzzled as to why someone so technically savvy would opt to pay a monthly fee for a hosted blogging option instead of just using a free tool like WordPress. I always viewed services like TypePad to be geared towards those folks who had lots of interest in sharing their writing and photos with others, but not much geek-knowhow to set up a site on their own.

Gmail:  Do we really want a TERABYTE of space? (a.k.a. “Be careful what you wish for…")

Gmail indicates a terabyte of space available.

[See other BLADAM entries on Gmail... and also, as I've noted earlier, please do not ask me for an invite; I don't have any to spare... sorry! - Adam]

A number of Gmail users -- including yours truly -- have noticed that Gmail has seemingly upped the service storage limit to one terabyte. That's right... 1,000,000 -- one million -- megabytes (compared to Hotmail's two megabyte free storage limit, for instance). To put this into perspective... even if you got 250 e-mails each DAY (averaging four kilobytes each), it would take you about 2,739 YEARS to fill up this much space.

Of course, there's certainly the possibility that the new indication of a terabyte of space is a Gmail bug. Gmail is, after all, still very much in beta. But what if it's not a bug? What if the terabyte storage limit is really, well, real? Would we truly want a terabyte of space? Or would this lead to more problems than benefits?

A new Google service:  GoogleTimeTravel

On the new GoogleGroups2 beta test service, it was noted that a recent note was dated January, a few months prior to the day it was supposedly first seen.

Small minds suggested that this was a bug. But some of us know better!

I replied, out of the goodness of my heart, with the following detailed explanation:
